Tutu Aina-Mays didn't set out to just improve test scores. As a single mother in the UK, she envisioned a world where every child, regardless of background, had access to quality education. With limited resources but unwavering determination, she founded Tecnis Academy—a tutoring service aimed at leveling the academic playing field.

Building from Scratch: The Birth of Tecnis Academy

Starting with in-person sessions in Sittingbourne, Tecnis Academy quickly adapted to the challenges of the pandemic by transitioning to a robust online platform. This agility ensured uninterrupted learning for students aged 3 to 18, focusing on subjects like math, English, and science.

"We had to immediately switch everything online when the pandemic struck. We were put to the test, but we were also changed," Tutu reflects.

Personalized Learning at Its Core

Tecnis Academy stands out for its tailored approach. Whether it's one-on-one tutoring or group sessions, each program is customized to fit the student's pace and personality. Notably, the Phonic Stars Club, an 8-week initiative, has been instrumental in helping early readers thrive.

"We believe every child can succeed when given the right support," Tutu asserts. "It's not just about teaching content—it's about building confidence."

Community Engagement and Inclusive Education

Beyond academics, Tecnis Academy is deeply rooted in community involvement. By hosting free webinars and creating revision programs, the academy empowers parents and supports students from diverse backgrounds, including Black and minority ethnic communities and children of immigrant families.

"Children flourish when parents are empowered. We incorporate them into the learning process for this reason," she emphasizes.

Tutu's journey is a testament to resilience. Her book, A Mum's Success Story, chronicles her path from adversity to entrepreneurship. Now, she mentors aspiring educators, encouraging them to start their ventures despite fears.

"I had nothing but faith when I first started this business. On some days, I wanted to give up, but I knew I couldn't. My son was observing," she shares.
